平成23年度 三泗地区中学校英語スピーチコンテスト及び
英作文コンテストの主旨
国を超えて、人と人とをつなぐことができる英語のおもしろさを知っている各校の生徒が、それぞれのアイデアを披露し合い、学び合う場です。このコンテストはスピーチが1954年、英作文が1960年より始まり、40年を越える長い歴史を持っています。
スピーチの部では、当初教科書の本文を暗唱し、ジェスチャーを交えながら表現することが目標でした。しかし、その後社会が多様化する中で、自分自身の意見を持つことがより大切になったことから、オリジナルの部を設置しました。ネイティブスピーカーのサポートもあり、より自然な英語で自分のアイデアを表現できるようになりました。
また、最近では国際化が進み、学齢期に外国での在住経験のある生徒や英語を使用する国や地域の国籍を持つ保護者も増えてきました。しかし、他のスピーチコンテストでは、参加条件によってこのような生徒が参加できるチャンスがほとんどないことから、一昨年度から本スピーチコンテストでは参加条件も見直し、より多くの生徒が参加できるようにしました。現在は暗唱の部とオリジナルの部の二部門が設けられています。
英作文においては、その場で与えられた2つのタイトルから1つを選択し、120分の時間の中で自分の考えを英語でまとめます。辞書を使うことが認められていますが、基礎となる英語の力が何よりも大切です。さらに豊かな発想力が要求されます。そこで、本年度も「英作文コンテストに参加する皆さんへのヒント」や四日市市英語指導員（ＹＥＦ）のサンプルを各校に配布しました。その結果、どの作品も参加者一人一人の個性が発揮されていて、読みごたえのある作品が多く見られました。
今後も、このコンテストを通して、一人でも多くの生徒が英語の持つおもしろさを味わい、国際社会で活躍できる豊かな心と実力を身につけてほしいと願っています。
2011 Sanshi Speech & Composition Reflection
Every year participants of the Sanshi speech and composition contest never cease to amaze. Both the speeches and compositions were quite impressive to the native English speaking judges. It was apparent how much time and hard work every contestant put into preparing for this competition and it was much appreciated.
We would like to recognize the students, not just the ones that received awards, but every student. It is an accomplishment to do what they did and they should be commended for it. It is very challenging to deliver a speech or write a composition in a foreign language: one of the native English speaking commentators experienced this first hand as he tried to memorize and deliver a speech entirely in Japanese to the contestants. It is also important to thank the teachers, family members and all the people that helped support the contestants as they prepared for the competition. Their support was invaluable to the success of the contestants.
We can only hope that this competition has encouraged the students to further their English education. We also hope that the students will take with them the experiences before, during, and after the contest and apply them to any other aspect of their life. Being junior high school students, they did exceptionally well. Again, we would like to express how truly proud and amazed we are of the students of Yokkaichi. Great job!
